The three points that Overberg identifies are 1. Jesus rested and eliminated suffering, 2. Jesus rejected suffering as punishment for sin, and 3. Jesus trusted a compassionate, present God. These three points describe how Jesus uniquely responded to suffering. The first point explains how Jesus worked to minimize all of the suffering around him. He traveled all around to different cities and towns ridding people of disease and oppression. By eliminating the suffering of others, Jesus was able to bring about happiness, which is part of the message of God. The second point describes how Jesus did not believe in using forced suffering as a punishment for wrongdoing, because even if you sin, God will not punish you. Good and bad happen to everyone. The third point says that even though Jesus' suffering was part of God's plan, he still always trusted in God because God is a gentle, loving parent for all.
The view of Atonement/Ransom is a mixture of different things. Some people who had this view believed in animal sacrifice, and that pouring the animal's blood on the alter would connect the people to God. Some believed that reconciliation was not legitimate unless you satisfied the king. This views portrays an image of God as angry and demanding, which is disturbing to many people. The view of Incarnation is one that believes in "God's sharing of life and love in a unique and definitive way," and that Incarnation was God's original intention for humankind. I agree with this view because it is peaceful and rational, and does not involve sacrificing living things. This view is much more positive and shows God in a kind, loving, fatherly way.
